Mini Trip to Ojai

So I hope you guys are enjoying the new layout. I know I kept constantly changing it this weekend, but I will try to fight the urge to change it. I just can't seem to settle for the look I want, so I'll see what you guys end up liking best, after all this blog is all for you :)

Anyway, I finally had my sinus situation controlled today and was able to take a little trip to Ojai with one of my Meetup book groups. Even though it was still a bit rainy, it was still a nice day to drive out to Bart's Books, an outdoor independent bookstore.

Inside (well within the bookstore) there were tons of books and they even had a classics room where my friend Vanessa managed to get an almost mint condition of H.G. Wells The Invisible Man for only $12.  It is a pretty cool store just for the fact that it is all outdoors, but no worries the books are covered, so they weren't wet or anything. It is also nice that the store takes credit cards so you don't have to worry if you didn't bring cash with you. Here are a few pictures of the "inside":

Isn't it cute? I don't know about you, but I like being able to drive an hour or so away from L.A. and take mini trips to quirky places like this one. I am still in awe that this bookstore exists and so grateful Vanessa suggested a visit to it. And if you are asking if I resisted buying more books, you are wrong LOL. I mean who can resist buying books from such a unique place AND at a discount. So this is what I got for $26 (sorry for the bad pic):

I had wanted to read The Help, The Weird Sisters and Girls in White Dresses for a while and Vanessa suggested Defending Jacob since we were discussing mystery novels at the bookstore. I still can't believe what I paid for all for since each is about $15 at retail price. Anyway that wasn't the only thing we did in Ojai. After everyone had gotten their books( it was 8 of us), we decided to go look for the strawberry shortcake place my sister had told me to check out, she swore it was the best she's ever had, and it seems she was right, 'cause it was delicious (Yes I detoured from the 21 day fix a bit).

My sister didn't remember the name of the restaurant however, so we had to search for it on Yelp, which wasn't hard to do as it seemed to be pretty popular. So off we went to Boccali's, which was equally as cute, and had some great views of the mountains that surround Ojai. The only downside to this cute little joint is that they only take cash or check, so do come prepared if you make the trip.

This picture does not do the mountains justice.

Their Specials menu outside their door.

Yummy Minestrone soup.

And the reason we ended up at Boccali's...The Strawberry Shortcake
Overall, it was a pretty fun min trip out of the city. It is completely doable in a day and we all had a great time discussing books, the latest fashion in glasses, and catching up on what else is going on in each other's life. Also, even with the rain, Ojai is beautiful no matter what. I will definitely be going back, especial when it gets a bit warmer since Ojai also has some amazing hiking trails. So if you live  in Southern California, say L.A. or are visiting, I would 100% recommend you make a trip to Ojai for some deeply discounted books and the best Strawberry Shortcake in the area.

Love,
Astrid

Catching Up With Old Friends

Hey guys so already I'm being terrible at this blogging every single day, but I kinda do have a good reason. You see this post was suppose to go up on Saturday. Once again I had waited until late that day to write a post. Basically I was being lazy most of Saturday watching television and had only accomplished doing my Yoga X (I am in Phase II of P90X now). Anyway getting to the point of this post, as I was planning to get ready to start blogging and doing all my other online duties (i.e. editing vlogs, cleaning my inbox, etc) and stuff that was actually conducive to having a "Get Shit Done Day", my friend Denise called. Now, Denise and I go way back. We went to Kindergarten together and instantly became BFF's straight away. In fact, if I remember correctly, she was the one who took my hand to walk in on our first day of class (I am the shy one in this duo LOL but not as bad as when I was younger).

Our moms consequently also became good friends and so we continued our friendship until the 5th grade when her parents divorced and her mom got remarried and they moved away from the town we grew up in. Now myspace was a pretty new thing back then (does anyone remember those dark days? LOL jk) so not everyone had one, especially not most kids our age. I was pretty heartbroken not knowing how to reach her since we had gone through a lot together. Well a few years back, in High School, we reconnected again on Myspace (LOL before Facebook took over for world domination HAHAHA JK but close enough) and exchanged phone numbers. We clicked again instantly and it was wonderful to have her back in my life and my mom was pretty happy too. But then about 2 or 3 years later, we lost contact again. Partially it was due to an issue the occurred because my friend made a bad choice and partially because there were some hard times going on with her family that didn't help the situation. Well a year after that fallout (no hard feelings occurred really, just she needed to focus on herself and her family and deal with that) she added me on Facebook, but we had very little contact because well my friend is one of those oddballs that is not interested in being online much. If it wasn't for her mom, who is active on Facebook, I would have probably known nothing about whether that account was still relevant.

Well, about a week ago, her mom messaged me on Facebook and gave me Denise's number. I was surprised because it had been about 4 years since we had really talked on the phone. But I called and well, we ended up talking on the phone for 3 HOURS!!!! Now you know that's the real deal when you haven't talked to someone for years but seem to get back in the saddle immediately. We have continued talking a lot since then and since her mom's birthday was this past weekend, I ended up going clubbing with them and her mom's friend Saturday night. I was going to blog while I waited for them to come get me, but they got to where I am staying sooner than I thought.  So here are some pictures from that night (still need to upload the rest):
Her mom ordered this for the 4 of us

The moral of the story is, if you come across an opportunity to rekindle and old friendship or come across an old friend, seize the opportunity. You never know, you could end up dancing, having some drink called an Iguana and having a good time :)

Astrid

Finally Committing: 21 Days of Blogging

So I know I am probably the world's worst blogger. Lately however, I have really thought about finally giving my blog some love. It's not that I don't have things to write about it or that I find it a chore. In fact there are times I get so sad that another day has passed by that I haven't written something. Lately it is something that I really feel is missing from my day and so many ideas pop into my head, but somehow other things require my attention and then by the time I am able to sit down to type in my ideas, I am ready to hit the hay. Well a few days ago, I was going through some old Elle magazines (I hoard magazines btw) trying to clean out my collection again and came across an article focusing on 21 days of trying different makeup looks and hairstyles. That article got me thinking that maybe I should start a 21 day project of my own. Why 21? Well I'm sure you have heard the saying that it takes 21 days to form a habit and to an extent it is something that I follow. I do feel 21 days works to get you into the habit of doing something. When I started working out this year I made a habit of working out everyday and after the first 21 days, I do feel I had gotten into the habit and I also felt I didn't have to push myself as much because it now felt so natural to me to do it practically everyday (I did take rest days after the 21 days). Now I mentioned some of my reasons as to why I've been such a lousy blogger, but the other part is I never made it a point to form a habit of it, not a set plan anyway, just always the thought of "Oh well maybe I could write a post once a week or make a series of posts like Fashion Fridays or Tasty Tuesdays" but then I'd get so overwhelmed trying to get me on a "schedule" when it was something still so new to me. Once I saw the article and yesterday thinking of the new month to start, I decided ok Astrid, hop to it, form the habit.

Well enough of that strict talk lol, on to actually talking about August :) August is really an exciting month for me. For starters, I will be moving to another coast halfway through the month. That's right, I will finally be living my dream of living in NYC :)  It is something I've always wanted to do so I'm so excited that I will be there for a whole semester, but at the same time, in typical Astrid fashion, I am freaking the eff out LOL I feel there is still so much to get done, but I know I'm also probably just overthinking and need to chill out. One of the things on my list is to get all my vlogs on my YouTube channel up to date. I am so far behind on them and have been bummed that some videos seemed to have disappeared, but I'll figure it out. Also I just signed up for a motivational mail thing put together by some of the girls from the Toneitup.com community, which if I haven't mentioned it before, is what started my whole fitness/clean eats journey. I love receiving fun mail as opposed to bills. Another thing coming up is I'm getting a new computer because the one I have is literally falling apart. Let's see what else, oh well I'm in my second month of P90X and I just got new glasses so yea. I don't know it just feels August is going to be a great month. Anyways, off to bed. Lot's of good posts coming up these next 21 days (well 20 I guess since this is post #1).

Stay Tuned,
Astrid
