Fashion Moment: Espadrilles

Fashion Moment: Espadrilles

Last week when I went shopping for new work flats, I noticed that Espadrilles were really having a Fashion Moment this spring. Espadrilles have been around for a while, but for some reason they seem to be back in style more than ever this year. I've especially been drawn to espadrille flats, they just seem so comfy and versatile as they come in a variety of materials and patterns and styles, but what exactly is an espadrille?

An Espadrille is

defined

as canvas shoe with a sole made of twisted (jute) rope. It is usually a casual shoe, although they can also be found as wedges and high-heels, but either way, they will have the defining characteristic of the twisted rope sole. This style of shoe

originated

in the 14th century in Spain and France, so yea these aren't anything new, but they are a perfect staple to add to your Spring wardrobe this year.

Among my favorites are the classic two toned espadrilles (like the ones shown above) as well as some of the more "modern" ones with fade bold stripes and the ones that have a perforated upper. I also love some of the more fun ones with sparkles and appliqués added and the sneaker ones seem like a good idea too. The number one on my wish list though is

this

(shown below) embroidered pair from Forever 21. They are just the perfect espadrille for Spring, aren't they?

In The Trenches

In The Trenches

First off I want to say Happy St. Paddy's Day (recently learned Patty's is incorrect LOL). Anyway, I am excited to share this post with you because I haven't done a fashion post in so long. A few weeks ago, I went out shopping with my sister and noticed that as stores were bringing in their new Spring clothing, a lot of trench coats were popping up.

I don't know about you, but I do love me a good trench coat. They are super versatile and just look good with anything (IMO). They are lightweight and perfect for the warm LA nights out yet hold up in the rain as well (my bestie from Seattle can attest to this).

This year though, trench coats seem to have gotten a bit of a makeover. Usually when you think of a trench coat you thing of the usual beige long trench coat that belts at the waist. At the stores however, I saw trench coats in all different colors, particularly pastels. There were also navy blue and gray ones and some even came in this really nice faux suede fabric.

They are also coming in different lengths and styles. Some come in a slouchier style, sometimes with no buttons or with only a few. I honestly can't wait to get my hands on one. My favorites so far come in the shorter, slouchier variety and in dusty grays and blues. A trench coat is definitely a staple I think ever woman should have in her closet, and its nice that with these "twists" to the classic trench coat can adapt to each woman's individual style.

What do you think about these new trench coats? Which ones do you have your eye on?

Makeup Monday: Summer 2014 Nail Trends

For this week's Makeup Monday, I wanted to feature some of the Summer Nail Trends I've come across. I don't often paint my nails, usually because I get busy and it becomes the last thing on my list, but never because I don't actually want to paint them lol. I'm hoping that this summer I can have more days with nail polish on my nails then days sans polish. So here are some of the trends I found.

1. Dark Nails

Usually darker nail polish colors are reserved for the colder winter/fall months, but it seems this summer wants dark nails too. I personally love this trend as I usually go for the darker polish colors. Also, I love the way the dark colors look against light clothing, kind of edgy. Loving navies the most.

2. White Nails

On the other side of the spectrum, and repeating last week's

, white nails are also very hot this summer. I think this is the black nail of summer, chic yet simple.

3. Neon Nails

It seems summer is having it's fun with color, as the two previous trends have dealt with the dark and white trend. Neon nails are also trending this summer and this is appropriate since summer is usually when people wear the brightest colors. I am excited to try this as my usual polish choices are bland, plus the neon hues seem to make you appear tanner, without actually roasting in the sun.

4. Floral Designs

I have to say, this is probably my favorite of the trends. It really speaks for summer, plus it looks so pretty. Not too long ago, I went to Sephora and saw some polishes that have flowers instead of glitter pieces in it and I'm now obsessed. But getting one hand painted on your nail is also nice :)

5. Gradient/Ombré Nails

This is another trend I've been seeing a lot lately, and even though it's nothing new, I still want to try it. I've seen so many different variations on Instagram and they all look so pretty. My favorites have been those that have a purple/turquoise combo or classic black and white combo.

While there are sure to be other summer nail trends out there and yet to surface, these are the ones I've come across and actually want to try out. Let me know if you will be trying these trends come summer or share any other trend I might have missed. Also, if you have any suggestions on what you want to see here on the blog, leave that in the comments below as well. I'm always open to ideas.

White it Out

This week's Trendy

Tuesday

Wednesday(sorry it went up late by an hour or two) is all about the color white. With summer just around the corner, white seems like the perfect choice to wear to keep things fresh, yet chic. I personally have always been afraid to wear white because it's so hard to not spill coffee and stuff on myself, but I'm obsessed with this trend and ready to just take the "risk" already.

White is like the black of summer. What I mean is that often people will turn to black because it's easy to wear and can make an outfit look chic and dressed up. I'm sure you've heard that everyone in NYC wears black(not true FYI) and it's how they look so fashionable and chic(sorry I know I'm using this word a lot here). But black in the summer is not fun. Black just makes you hot and miserable in the summer because it attracts the sun and thus the scorching summer heat. So it's white to the rescue.

To wear this trend, I'm going to opt for structured pieces. I definitely want the white blazer and trousers, especially with my internship going on this summer. Another must have item that follows this trend, and that I think is a classic, is the white pump. And of course I'll be trying this trend monochromatically, because I think that makes the trend as sleek as it gets. Now I need to go shop :)

Will you be trying this trend? Any tips for how to make it work/keeping the dirt off? Let me know in the comments below. Also if you have any trends you want me to feature, let me know as well.

Love,

Astrid
